Referral/Speciality Surgery 

At Orchard Park, we are equipped to perform most veterinary surgeries, including those conducted on an emergency basis.  Our surgical specialist is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).  This requires an additional 4 years of specialized surgical training beyond veterinary school, publication of an original research article, and completion of a certifying examination. We are currently recruiting a new boarded surgeon.

Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgical services & procedures performed here at OPVMC include fracture fixation, which can be performed with pins, screws, bone plates, interlocking nails, or external skeletal fixation. 

Other orthopedic surgeries may include triple pelvic osteotomies or femoral head and neck excision for hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament repair, luxating patella repair, treatment of osteochondritis dessicans (OCD), joint arthrodesis, and many others. 

Myelograms and spinal surgery are also performed for intervertebral disc disease (disc herniation) or spinal tumors. 

Congenital spinal abnormalities such as atlanto-axial malformations or traumatic spinal fractures can also be repaired.

We also offer tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) for your dog.  

Soft Tissue Surgery

Soft tissue surgery and gastrointestinal procedures offered at OPVMC include foreign body removal, gastric dilatation/volvulus surgery (GDV), pancreatic diseases, and surgical treatment for cats with megacolon. 

Hepatobiliary procedures which treat diseases of the liver and gall bladder. 

Portosystemic shunt (PSS or liver shunt) surgery can be performed in animals with this congenital anomaly. 

Thoracic surgery is done to perform surgery on the heart (patent ductus arteriosus or PDA) or lungs (cancer, abscesses, or pneumothorax).

Oncology

Oncology or cancer surgery is part of diagnosing and treating certain types of cancer.  The post-surgical prognosis varies depending on the location and type of cancer.  Some pets are cured with surgery.  Other patients may be treated with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy, or chemotherapy alone.
