Semen Freezing

OPVMC has been a Semen Freezing Center for over 15 years. The advantages of frozen semen are listed below:

  1. Long-Term Storage: Frozen semen allows the genetic potential of an individual dog to be preserved for future use.
  2. Breeding to an unavailable dog: Occasionally a dog is not available when a bitch (female dog) must be bred. This often occurs when the male dog is out of town for a dog show.
  3. Long-Distance and International Breeding: Breeders often wish to use dogs living in other countries in their breeding programs. Properly packaged frozen semen can be shipped anywhere in the world.

Procedure for Semen Freezing:
It is best to freeze a dog’s semen when the dog is still relatively young, as semen quality can decline with age. When you make an appointment for semen freezing, we will ask you to bring a female dog that is in heat with you to the appointment. The presence of the female will help to assure that we can successfully collect a semen sample from your dog. If you do not have access to a female dog that is in heat, we will call a local breeder to see if we can “rent” one from them for the appointment. This “rental” fee is passed on to you at the time of the appointment. Once we have collected the semen sample, we will analyze it in our lab to be sure it is of good enough quality to freeze. The freezing process takes approximately five hours to complete. Once the freezing is complete we provide you with a report indicating the number of inseminations that can be performed from the sample. The frozen semen is temporarily stored here in special liquid nitrogen tanks. The semen will ultimately be shipped to Synbiotics, a long term storage facility. Annual storage fees are billed to you directly from Synbiotics.  The frozen semen can then be shipped anywhere in the world when you are ready to use it.
